The world of Midnight Outpost just got bigger. Venture beyond the outpost walls to gather wood in the first explorable zone: a handcrafted forest filled with wind-swaying trees, ambient birdsong, and resources worth the trip.

Up until now, Midnight Outpost has been contained within the outpost walls. This update changes that — players can now explore the world outside, starting with the Forest Zone.

A Living World

The Forest Zone is the first of several explorable areas that surround the outpost. Its position in the world is procedurally determined from your save seed, so every new game places it somewhere different — but its contents are always handcrafted. No random-generated clutter, just a dense, hand-placed forest that feels like a real place.

Wind & Atmosphere

One of the things we cared most about was making the forest feel alive. Two custom vertex shaders bring movement to the scene:

  • Grass shader — the ground cover of grass, herbs, and wildflowers sways with gusts of wind. Each tile moves uniformly regardless of its position in the atlas, giving a natural and consistent feel.
  • Tree shader — four species of trees (pine, oak, and two variants) each bend gently in the wind, anchored at the trunk with a quadratic falloff toward the crown.

Pair that with spatial ambient birdsong that fades as you walk away from the zone, and the forest has a presence you can actually feel.

Resources & Renewal

Wood is the lifeblood of the outpost — walls, buildings, repairs all depend on it. The Forest Zone provides a reliable renewable supply: trees respawn after a few in-game days, so there’s always a reason to come back.

The outpost’s own trees, however, are a different story. Once cut, they don’t grow back. The forest isn’t just content — it’s the gate that keeps the world worth exploring.

Zone Loading

Zones load and unload dynamically as you move through the world. The state of every tree — depleted, chopped, standing — is saved and restored across sessions. Your progress in the forest persists.

What’s Next

The Forest Zone is done. Next up: the Quarry, a rocky zone with finite stone and ore deposits, and enemies patrolling the area. Gather fast, or fight your way through.

Stone is now worth venturing out for. The Mine Zone is a handcrafted rocky quarry procedurally placed in the world — gather stone, let deposits respawn over days, and build further than ever before.

We rebuilt the entire visual foundation of Midnight Outpost in isometric view. Here is what that actually meant — tile systems, y-sorting, building footprints, wall bitmasks, and why it was worth it.
